“Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.” – George Washington Carver
One of the biggest challenges that people face when desiring to pursue their goals or when desiring to change their circumstances is that their present situation seems to become the excuse for not moving forward and not the motivation to press past the challenges. Today it could be one excuse for not taking that first step. Then tomorrow, there is a new set of excuses for not getting started or moving forward. It is a cycle that keeps people stuck: making excuses!
But if not now, when? We can always find an excuse not to do something. When does it end? When do you just throw caution to the wind and succumb to that nagging, gnawing feeling in your gut that says there is something greater for you to have or to do?
I know all too well how challenging it is to avoid the distractions of current circumstances or problems. I know what it is like to want to abandon your dreams for something easier, safer or more comfortable. After all, isn’t safe and easy the better route?
The message is clear: Stop making excuses for not doing the things you want to do!
While safe and easy may seem attractive at first glance, it just doesn’t yield the results needed when you commit to your purpose. You simply cannot get where you want to go by playing it safe. Making excuses is playing it safe.
Yes, there are risks involved when you decide to go for your dreams. And I know that risks scare people away from the vision they have for their life. I certainly get that. But name one successful person who didn’t have to take risks; who didn’t have to press past their situations; or who didn’t have to resist the urge to make excuses for why they couldn’t do something! Stories of such people are just some of the reminders of what is necessary to do when you choose to follow your purpose or calling.
There is much more to be gained in the journey to greatness; in the journey to becoming who you are truly meant to be; in the journey to changing your circumstances.
What I have come to realize is that the want, the determination, the hunger for goal has to be greater than the fear; greater than the doubt; greater than the excuses. And at some point, there has to be a sense of urgency when it comes to walking in our purpose. You have to get the “it’s-now-or-never” attitude.
How determined are you for the things you wish in your life? Are you willing to abandon the excuses and take action?
