The Value of the Dinner Table

No matter how hectic the day, no matter how involved I get in my work or studies, I look forward to the dinner table.  To me, the dinner table has represented more than the sharing of a good meal.

The dinner table presents an opportunity to pause, slow down and connect with those around me; in my case, my immediate family.

I am not sure when I began to relish the dinner table as much as I do now.  I don’t necessarily recall such fondness from my childhood.  But now that I am a mother and a wife, I see how important the dinner table has become in my life.  It is an invitation into the lives of my family.  It is the time when nothing else matters but the exchange of food and the sound of delightful highlights from the day.  It is also a chance to discover what problems or concerns may exist.

It is amazing what things get uncovered when people gather together over a meal.  You are almost forced (or gently nudged :-) ) to take notice of other people and resist the urge of being self-absorbed.

You get to sit eye to eye across from the people in which you share your life with.

You have an opportunity to actually have a conversation that does not involve cryptic text messages, emailing or brief Facebook and Twitter exchanges.

Actual verbal conversation has become a lost art in our society as we’ve either forgotten how to really talk to one another on a deeper level, or we just don’t care to make the time to have such a dialogue.

Regardless of the family dynamics or relationships, if we would at least show some importance in sitting down together over a meal (or cup of coffee or tea) on a regular, consistent basis, we might be reminded of what real conversations look like.

What happens at your dinner table? What can you do to enrich the conversations in your life?
