When things go wrong as they sometimes will;
When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill;
When the funds are low, and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but have to sigh;
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest if you must, but do not quit.
Success is failure turned inside out;
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt;
And you can never tell how close you are
It may be near when it seems so far;
So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit.
It’s when things go wrong that you must not quit. -Unknown
Ever come across something so powerful that it stops you in your tracks; or it speaks to you so loudly that you literally pause and replay it over and over?
That’s exactly what happened when I came across this quote. It was so profound that I had to share it with you.
When I left my career with the U.S. Attorney’s Office a few years ago to pursue my purpose and to grow my business, I knew there would be changes, challenges and all things inconvenient. But I was willing to take the leap, in spite of the fear that remained constant; in spite of the fear that still tries to grip me even today.
I have often felt like giving up. In my mind, I have thrown in the towel many times.
What was I thinking? Is this really the path for me? Can I keep going? When will the payoff come? Why does it seem like things are not going the way I envisioned?
Can you relate?
But something on the inside (way down deep on the inside) keeps nudging me on. Giving up is not an option. Turning back now is not an option.
When I consider on all the people I’m helping (and have yet to help), all the lives I’ve affected, I’m reminded of my purpose. I’m reminded of the responsibility I have to walk in my personal greatness. I’m reminded of the joy and satisfaction I get when I see lives transformed. My purpose is greater than my problems or challenges.
According to Lisa Nichols, author of “No Matter What,” persisting in your purpose and calling no matter what is about developing that “determination muscle.” Nichols states the determination muscle “enables you to zero in on the most effective approach for getting to your goal–which at times may require patience.”
Ah! Patience. That’s a tall order when difficulties arise. We want the problem or challenge over…immediately, right? Yes! As a result, our focus shifts to the circumstance, taking our eyes off the goal. But when we stay focused and determined, we stay connected to our purpose. We stay connected to doing whatever it takes to get the outcome we strive for.
I often tell my clients that you have to stay hungry for what you want. Otherwise, you are just going through the motions with no real commitment, no emotional connection to the actions being taken. And you will soon tire from frustration and exhaustion and give up.
Are you determined enough to keep going even when things go wrong (as they sometimes will)? I am. And I hope you are, too, because someone needs what you have to offer. Don’t be a disservice to yourself and to others by giving up.
Remember the words in the quote above, and stay in the game!
